Erä-Oula
Sørøya Crossing
During this week-long hike we will walk across Norway’s fourth largest island. Sørøya, surrounded by the Norwegian Sea, is also called the green island of the North. The total distance of this hike is approximately 100 km – depending on the detours.
During the week we will be rewarded with spectacular views in all directions. The landscape is dominated by green rolling hills, white beaches and vertical rock cliffs reaching straight out from the sea. The coast of Sørøya is housing various birds species and the flora is rich. The island is dotted by over thousand pristine mountain lakes, and the fishing possibilites are excellent. You will need a license if you want to try fishing in the evenings from our camp spots! The weather can vary greatly and we can expect everything from beautiful sunny days to coastal fog, low temperatures and strong wind.
Walking on the tundra is mostly easy, but there will be some more challenging terrain as well. Parts of the tour will follow the marked “Sørøya på langs”-hiking trail, but mostly we will walk off the beaten track. All the nights during the hike are slept in tents. We will carry all our food, camping equipment and personal belongings in backpacks. The itinerary is adapted according to the weather conditions and human factors. This is a moderate tour and the participants should be in good physical condition. The tour will start end end i Øksfjord ferry terminal.
Daily itinerary
Day 1
We will meet in Øksfjord ferry terminal in early afternoon. We will divide the common equipment, pack and go through the plans of the following week. We will take the ferry in the afternoon to Hasvik village. If you arrive with private car, you can leave it parked in Øksfjord. Alternatively you can join the group in Hasvik, if you want to arrive to Sørøya earlier.
From Hasvik we will take a local bus to the starting point of our hike. In the evening we hike approximately 4–5 km to our first camping spot and pitch our tents for the night.
Day 2-7
Full days of walking. The daily distances will vary from 13,5 km to 20 km. We will prepare breakfast and dinner in the camp. During the day we will enjoy simple lunch outside.
Day 8
In the early afternoon we arrive to Akkarfjord village, where we will catch the ferry back to Øksfjord. There will be one change of ferry in Hammerfest – and a possibility to step out there. We will be in Øksfjord in the evening.
Additional costs
The price of the tour will not cover the local bus from Hasvik to the starting point of the hike and the ferry from Akkarfjord to Øksfjord.
